In 1961 the 16th Annnual Statewide Festival, May 26, 27, 28, and 29, traveled north to San Jose for "La Fiesta de Las Rosas," hosted by the Peninsula Folk Dance Council. General Chairperson, Ken Stevens and his Committee, had arranged a weekend of dance, both inside and out, with other attractions, such as a special dinner at Ed's Chuck Wagon Saturday night and a tour of the Valley Monday, which would inlude the famous Winchester House and Paul Mason's Champagne Cellars. The latter sounded mighty tempting should the weather turn out to be hot.
The official headquarters hotel, the Sainte Claire, is most conveniently located just across from the Civic Auditorium, where most of the dancing will be done.
The Friday evening Opening Party attracted a sizeable crowd. The Kolo Dancers, who are growing in size by leaps and bounds, were not forgotten. They are ready to dance any time, day or night, or around the clock. Their Friday night dance started at 11:00 p.m. in the Sainte Claire Ballroom and ran until ???.
The Institute Saturday afternoon featured Mexican dances taught by Al Pill and Scottish dances taught by C. Stewart Smith. Chairperson for the Institute was Harlan Beard.
Many folks did take advantage of the Saturday night special dinner at Ed's Chuck Wagon and the price was right, $3.00, while later in the evening, following the Festival at the Civic Auditorium, the Kolo Kids again lived it up at the Sainte Claire.
The Evaluation Breakfast was given a new name and a new purpose, Installation of new officers for both the North and South, so it's now the Installation Breakfast. Presidents Lawrence Jerue of the North and Ralph Miller of the South were introduced and installed as the new officers for their respective Federations. The Past Presidents in attendance were also introduced and there were quit a number. Price of breakfast, $2.00.
Following breakfast we motored out to the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden for some dancing on the lawn and then motored back for the evening program at the Auditorium.
If we failed to mention the Exhibitions we should have as they were great, the arrangements having been made a Committee of Walter Grothe, Lee Eichelberger, and Valerie Staigh.
We were especially impressed with the Festival Program, complete in every detail and fine souvenier for those who were careful to keep it as a reminder of a great time in San Jose, at the "La Fiesta de las Rosas." Those who didn't make it home Monday night were welcome as guests at the Gay Nighters Open House at Hoover Junior High School.
