Alunelul
        Little hazelnut (or John's dance)

// Alunelu, alunelu hai la joc,
Să ne fie, să ne fie cu noroc! //
Cine-n horă o să joace
Mare, mare se va face
Cine n-o juca de fel
Va rămîne mitetel.

/ Alunelu, alunelu hai la joc,
Să ne fie, să ne fie cu noroc! /
Joacă joaă tot pe loc
Să răsară busuoic
Joacă joacă tot așa
Joacă și nu te lăsa.
Little hazelnut, let's dance, let's all have fun,
And be gay!
Whoever will dance,
will grow strong and tall,
Those who won't dance
Will stay weak and small.

Little haelnut, let's dance, let's all have fun,
And be gay!
Dance oh dance on this ground
Until the grass grows,
Dance, oh keep dancing,
Never stop or slow down.

NOTE:
Traditionally, it has been thought that "Alunelul" means "little hazelnut."
Thus, this would be the "little hazelnut dance" as done in Sadova.
Romanian folklore specialist, Theodor Vasilescu, favors the meaning as
a contraction of "A lu Nelu" (where Nelu is the name "John" so the meaning is
"John's dance") because, with the exception of Floricica ("little flower"),
dances are rarely named for trees, plants, or flowers.

Bărîneasca din Vicov
Old person's dance from Vicov, Moldavia

Șihai hăi, măi flăcai
Să jucam bătuta mă
Și tot așa și sari în sus
Că poale la cămeșe nu-s
Poalili le-o ros guzganii
Si-am rămas numai cu stanii

Poali sînt, dar nu le-am pus
Că-s la mamuța pa fus
Da le-oi toaree și le-oi țese
Și le-oi pune la cameșe
Și-oi ieși la job în sat
Că-s fată de măritat
Si-oi juca pîn sat

Și haideți voi picioare moi
Că și eu îs di pe voi
Și nu va dați muietului
Ca iarba tăietuliu
Și-aista picior ma doare
Dar cu-aista bat mai tare
Și-aisa-i picior mai scurt
Dar cu-aista bat mai mult

Hai de jucat aș juca bine
Mi-i rușine de copile
Mi-i rușine de flăcăi
Că s-auită-n pașii mai
Tropa, tropa pe podele
Ciubotele nu-s a mele
Și ma tem ș nu le rup
Cî-s laute cu-împrumut
Tropa, tropa pe podele
Ciubotele nu-s a mele
Că le am de căpătat
Mulțămesc cui mi le-o dat

  Hey, hey, you lads
Let's dance the "Batuta."
So that's the way it goes and jump.
Because my blouse doesn't have a hem.
The hem was eaten by big mice.
Only the upper part remains.

The hem is there, but I haven't put it on
Because it is still on my mother's spindle,
But I shall spin it and weave it,
And I shall put it on the shirt,
And I shall go and dance in the village
For I am a nubile girl
And I shall dance until it becomes dark.

Let's go, weak legs
For I am on top of you
And don't be so weak
As grass before it is cut.
And this leg aches
And I stamp harder with it.
And the other leg is shorter
But I stamp more often with it.

I can dance well enough
But I am ashamed of the girls.
I am ashamed of the boys
Because they look at my steps.
Trample, trample on the floor.
My boots are not mine
And I am afraid to tear them
Because I have borrowed them.
Trample, trample on the floor.
Because I have borrowed them
It is the reason I have them.
I thank the person who gave them to me.

Ciuleandra
        Tumbleweed dance

Foaie verde și minoc
Ține-ți ciuleandra pe loc.

        Chorus:
        Și-nc-odată, măi băieți,
        Hooooop ș'așa, ș'așa.

Tineți-o, flăcăi, așa
Pînă n-ajunge puica.

        Chorus:

Întăriți-o liță lus
C-ajunge acuș, acuș.

        Chorus

Mai întăriți-o de un pas
C-ajuns și n-a rămas.

        Chorus

Două fire, două paie
Lauți ciuleandra la bătaie.

        Chorus

Tot așa că nu mă las
Că sînt cu puica de-un pas.

        Chorus

Două fire, două paie
Lauți ciuleandra la bătaie.

        Chorus

Green leaves of Minoc (a plant),
Do ciuleandra in place!

        Chorus:
        And once again, my boys,
        Oooh, like this, like this.

Do it this way, you young men, thus,
Until "Puica" (girl's name meaning little chicken) arrives.

        Chorus

Hurry up now,
She is catching up with us.

        Chorus

Hurry up, one more step.
She caught up and she is gone.

        Chorus

Two stalks, two straws–
Do ciuleandra to beat it (the tempo).

        Chorus:

Like this because I can't give up,
Because I am with "Puica" at one step.

        Chorus

Two stalks, two straws,
Do ciuleandra to beat it.

        Chorus

De-a Lungul (Mindra mea de la Ciubud)
My sweetheart from Ciubud (Along the line)

Mîndra mea de la Ciubud,
Multe vorbe-n sat se-aud,
Spune lumea pe la noi,
Că fac seara drum pe voi, măi . . .

Spune lumea, bat-o vina,
C-ar fi ochii tăi pricina,
Ochii tăi ca doua mure,
Inima vor să mi-o fure.

Dar eu lumii-n cuidă-i fac,
Cînd le spun că ochii-nu plac,
Și-oi veni măi des la voi,
Să-ți dau, mîndră, buze moi, măi . . .
Și-am să te cer de mireasă,
Mîndra mea, floare aleasă.

  My sweetheart from Ciubud;
Rumors are flying in the village.
The world is saying that I keep going too often
In the evening to your place.

God bless the world.
They say that your eyes may be the reason.
Your eyes are like two black berries.
They want to steal my heart.

But in spite of them (the world),
I keep telling them I like your eyes;
That I will come to visit you more often
To kiss you, my sweetheart, with my soft lips,
And I will ask you to be my bride, my sweetheart,
My chosen exquisite flower.

I have gladly come, good evening,
To rejoice with you.
We will celebrate and dance;
Our hearts will be very happy.

I have come here
To rejoice together.
I have gladly come
To rejoice with you.

Let's dance, good people,
Take glasses of wine and cheers,
This evening is a special evening
With great wines and musicians.

I like this place where I came,
And the people I have met.
Because there are good people here,
I don't leave this lovely place until Monday!

Girl, ready your little trunk, because you leave your mother.
I don't even have a bride.

Girl, ready your skirts like the soldier gets his weapons.
I don't even have a bride.

Girl, ready your clothes, because you are going like the recruits.
I don't even have a bride.

Over the hills to other yards, to unknown parents.
I don't even have a bride.

Go, mother, outside and prop up the sun.
I don't even have a bride.

May lthis day last longer, so I may stay longer with your.
I don't even have a bride.

Învârtita din Luna-Turda
        Spinning dance from Luna-Turda

Că ți-oi fi, bădița dragă,
Cu păru-n năframă albă,
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
Cu flori roșii podobită
Ca să știi că-ți sunt iubită.
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.

Că și io, bade, ți-oi coase
Tot cu fire de mătase
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
Pe cămașa ta cea albă
Multe flori care-o să-ți placă.
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.

Pînă ne-om împreuna
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.

Împreună pe ogor.
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.

Amîndoi ne vom iubi
Viață nouă ne-om glăddi,
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
Viață în gospodărie,
Tineri-n tovărășie.
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.

  That is you, dear Badita,
The white kerchief in your hair,
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
The red flowers like jewels
To know that you are loved.
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.

That and him, bade, you sew sheep
All the silk
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.

Many a flower to your liking.

With the field.

We'll get a new life dear one,
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
Life in the household,
Youth in companionship.
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.

Joc de Leagăne
        Dance of the cradle

/ Mama cînd m-o leganat,
Numai de dor mi-o cîntat. /

/ Mi-o cîntat de dor si-o plîns.
Dorul de mine s-o prins. /

/ De cînd port dor la inima, /
Numai am nici o hodina,
Nici la prinz si nici la cina.

/ Cite doruri rele-s grele.
Tate-s pa bratele mele. /

/ Altul moare de batrîn,
Nu sti dorul de ce-i bun. /

/ Dar eu stiu ca l-am purtat
De cîd mama mi-o cîntat. /

Ai la la la la . . .
When my mother was rocking me,
She was singing of longing.

She was singing of longing and I cried.
I've been caught by longing.

Since my heart is longing,
I have no respite
Neither at noon nor at evening.

How many longings? All are deep and bad.
All are in my arms.

One dies being old
Not knowing what's the good of longing.

But I know I've carried it
Since my mother sang.

Ai la la la la . . .
