For Annual Statewide Festival number 21, the Peninsula Folk Dance Council bid and were granted the 1966 Festival and with memories of the great job they did in 1964, we all set our sights on San Jose for "Our Wonderful World of Dance."
One might wonder why, after their recent great success, they would not be content to just sit back and let someone else cary the ball but the folks on the Peninsula are made of sterner stuff, to borrow a phrase, and we are glad they are. They picked an excellent General Chairperson in Carolyn Riedeman and a Committee that looks like "Who's Who in Northern California Folk Dancing." And who but Vern and Millie von Konsky to handle the Concert? Many people contributed but space will not allow us to name them all.
The headquarters hotel was again the Sainte Claire, with the Auditorium handling the Opening Party Friday night, the Saturday night dance following the Concert, as well as the Sunday afternoon and evening Dance Parties.
McCabe's Hall is where the kolo dancers are to do their stuff, from 10:30 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday nights, with a bit of variety on Saturday and a special party at Jose's Coffee House from 11:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. Here there will be a bit of everything, dancing, spontaneous exhibitions, folk singing, all with servings of coffee. A footnote on the program, "Anything can happen and probably will." And how else, with Grace Nichols and Edith Thompson in charge? The After Party for the kolo dancers Saturday night was juiced up with the tamburitza playing live.
The Institute Saturday afternoon was held at San Jose State College. Good show.
The Sunday morning Installation Brunch was conducted with a bit of class, featuring its own program. Eldon Kane was the Chairperson and Jim de Paoli was the MC. The new officers for both the South and North were installed by their respective presidents, Jesse Oser for the South and Ned Gault for the North. So far there has been little thought given to us Past Presidents but our time is coming as soon we will outnumber them.
Some names not already mentioned deserving of recognition are: Decorations, Jules di Cicco; Art Work, Frank Kane; Program and Art, Frank Kane; Institute, Charles Emerson, and many, many more. And let's not forget the 21 exhibition groups who performed so well at the Concert.
For those who could stay, a Monday morning Lunch and Request Dance Program took place at San Jose Municipal Rose Garden and there was dancing again at the Auditorium Monday afternoon. Thus ended the 1966 "Our Wonderful World of Dance" in San Jose.
