THE FIFTH INTERSECTION REUNION, 2010 The Intersection 2010 Reunion Flyer - Oakes

The 2010 Intersection Reunion was held on Saturday, October 23, 2010, at the Agoura Hills / Calabasas Community Center.

It was a tribute to Athan Karras, the principal owner of the I, who passed away in Tarzana, California, on February 12, 2010. More than 300 people attended.

The reunion included a superb Mediterranean dinner and Greek and International dancing. Proceeds from the event were donated in Athan's memory to the Basil P. Caloyeras Center for Modern Greek Studies at Loyola Marymount University.

Sherry Cochran put on a superb program and Dick Oakes narrated the party. The speakers were Louise Bilman, Sherry Cochran, Bonita Edelberg, Ted Karavidis, Nick Nichols, Paul Sheldon, Katina Shields, Anne Sirota, and Christina Tasulis.

Among the worker bees that put this event together were Laurie Allen, Sherry Cochran, Sue Gelles, Drina Johnson, Simeon Pillich, Jerry Savin, Katina Shields, Anne Sirota, and a group of decorators, including Dick and Carol Oakes. Drina Johnson, along with Debbie and Sage, handled the food.

THE FOURTH INTERSECTION REUNION, 2006 The Intersection 2006 Reunion Flyer

Plaque awarded at The Intersection 2006 Reunion What a great reunion we had at the 24th Summer Solstice Folk Music Dance & Storytelling Festival on Saturday, June 24, 2006! This was held on the beautiful campus of Soka University of America in Calabasas. The event was held in memory of Elaine Weissman and Rudy Dannes and the honorees were Sherry Cochran, Barry Glass, Nick Nickols, Dick Oakes, and Paul Sheldon. Although Barry couldn't attend, Sherry, Nick, Dick, and Paul all lined up to each receive a plaque from Athan Karras for the Fifth Intersection Reunion in "recognition for years of dedication teaching and fostering folk dance as a cultural expression."

The evening was lively, with live music provided by a Balkan Edition (their inaugural event!) interspersed with some recorded music. With about 200 folks showing up to dance, a merry time was had by all. Again this year, Paul "Chip" Sheldon led many of the dances. Both of the Romanian brothers Mihai David and Alexandru David showed up and led several dances. Of course, Athan Karras led several dances himself.

Athan Karras wrote, "We planned for the doors to open with non-stop music and dancing. Speeches would be held to a bare minimum and reminiscing would be impromptu. Projected on a large screen, old movies and slides of patrons dancing at the Intersection provided a backdrop and reminder of the way things were. Old friends greeted one another with smiles, hugs, and high fives before extending hands for the next dance. The Mediterranean buffet featured many goodies and a wide range of vegetarian offerings since most folk dancers gravitate toward healthy diets. Wine livened the spirits and quickened the feet."

From the flyer, "You are invited to a special, one-time-only event at the old Intersection, now the Dragon International Club, on Sunday, November 3, 1991. We will celebrate with food, fun, friendship, folkdancing and much more . . ."
