Karsten Evers and Ulrike Frydrych

Ulrike Frydrych studied electrical engineering and Karsten Evers worked as an architect before both came to folk music and folk dance through their hobby and participation in semi-professional music groups. Both completed several years of extra-occupational dance leader training and organized dance events in Berlin from the end of the 1970s, mainly with German and French dances. For these events, always with live music and without costume, they adopted for the first time the today usual French title "Bal Folk" as borrowing into German.
As French folklore dances were nearly unknown in Germany at that time, Ulrike and Karsten collected them over many years during their travels in France, wrote them down and taught them in seminars throughout Germany. The relatively wide spread of French dances in today’s German dance scene has its origins not least in these activities.
As a result of this commitment, Ulrike and Karsten took a second degree in cultural education. Karsten then worked for 26 years as a full-time teacher for very different subjects at the Academy for vocational and artistic-cultural further education "Burg Fürsteneck." Following his retirement, he is now a member of the board of the institution's supporting association. In international cooperation he is still one of the initiators of the teaching and dissemination of the nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle) in Germany and beyond. Ulrike works as a freelance music teacher for guitar, piano and flute. They are married and have two grown-up sons.
