Elma McFarland was chairperson of the Saturday Institute of the California Statewide Festival at Long Beach, California, in 1954.

Elma taught at the College of the Pacific Folk Dance Camp (now Stockton Folk Dance Camp) in 1949.

Elma was instrumental in the founding of the Idyllwild Folk Dance Workshop in 1951 and served as its chairperson and as the executie secretary.

Dances Elma taught include Butterfly Hornpipe, Hunsdon House, No Man's Jig, Piper's Fancy, Shepherd's Hey, Sleight's Sword Dance, Soldier's Joy, The Belfast Duck, Wyuresdale Greensleeves Dance (Old Man's Jig), and Yorkshire Square Eight.
